Paul Merson’s assessment of Chelsea’s summer transfer activity thus far is unsettling.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! For Thomas Tuchel’s Blues, the transfer market has been sluggish and irritating, claims commentator Merson.
To be honest, Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly’s arrivals to the team represent two major upgrades.
Many fans do believe that there is still more work to be done in the market, particularly if they are to catch up to the clubs above them.
Merson on Chelsea’s acquisition strategy
Merson argues that Chelsea’s aggressiveness during this window may “haunt” them in the future:
“I also dislike Chelsea’s business because it has been sluggish and might turn against them. Thomas Tuchel is becoming so frustrated because of it, Merson stated.
Interestingly, another commentator Jamie Carragher recently asserted that the Blues haven’t genuinely strengthened as a team, echoing Merson’s views.
Sterling joins a front line that, for the most part, wastes opportunities to score goals, while Koulibaly is a great like-for-like replacement for Antonio Rudiger now that he has arrived at Stamford Bridge. It’s difficult to refute the fact that this squad needs to add weight at center defense and up front.
There is still one month to finish the transfer activity, so there is plenty of time to welcome new personnel. Tuchel will likely have to make do with what he has as of next Saturday as the new league season kicks off.
The window’s score
Right now, a 7 out of 10.
Despite the need for a few more players, Sterling and Koulibaly’s first two additions under the new ownership deserve a lot of praise.
Both had strong performance in Friday night’s 3-1 preseason victory over Udinese, indicating they’ll be important players going forward.
You may still be looking at a 10/10 window if the Blues acquire more talent at center-back, forward, and another right wing-back.
But the clock is ticking now!
