A new chapter at Stamford Bridge has begun with Enzo Maresca signing a five-year deal as Chelsea’s head coach, with an option for an additional 12 months. After leading Leicester City to Premier League promotion and a Championship title, Maresca is now setting the stage for his tenure in west London.
Maresca’s Plans for Chelsea
Fabrizio Romano reports that Maresca is excited to work with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, a player he highly values. Additionally, there are indications that Maresca plans to make Cole Palmer a central figure in his Chelsea side and is enthusiastic about working with the club’s young talents.
Romano explained to CaughtOffside, “Maresca believes in the Chelsea project centered around young players with great potential. He finds it an exciting project. Chelsea directors and owners see him as a highly talented coach, ideal for both the present and future. His passion for ball possession, quality football, and game domination, along with his deep understanding of elite football, made him the perfect choice for Chelsea.”
Potential Exits Under Maresca
While some players are set to thrive under Maresca, others might be on their way out. Chelsea plans to sell Romelu Lukaku for around £38 million, and Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth reports that Borussia Dortmund is in talks to sign Ian Maatsen permanently. Another player likely to leave is striker Armando Broja, previously valued at around £50 million.
Broja Open to Saudi Move
Following a disappointing loan spell at Fulham, Broja may not attract offers near his earlier valuation. Journalist Ben Jacobs, writing for GiveMeSport, notes that Broja is open to a move to Saudi Arabia this summer, although clubs in the Middle East are likely to offer only up to £20 million for him—less than half of Chelsea’s earlier valuation.
For Chelsea, Broja’s sale would be pure profit given his development through the Cobham academy. It might be more crucial to offload him to free up funds. Despite his recent struggles, Broja had an impressive loan spell at Southampton, earning praise from Saints legend Francis Benali as a “sensational” player.
