” Wrong sign, he cannot help” – John Obi Mikel thinks £30m player summer sign can’t help with the current Chelsea situation
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!John Obi Mikel has not been shy about expressing his displeasure with Chelsea’s current situation, making his feelings known over recent weeks and months. The former midfielder, who enjoyed a long career at Stamford Bridge, believes the club’s performance and decisions, particularly in the transfer market, have not been up to the high standards expected of Chelsea.
Mikel has been especially critical of defenders Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile, claiming that neither player is good enough to be at the club. His comments suggest that Chelsea’s defensive woes are a major concern for him. Beyond that, Mikel has been vocal about his belief that the Blues need to strengthen their attack, particularly by signing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. Although Chelsea are reportedly still exploring the possibility of securing a deal for the Nigerian forward, nothing has been confirmed yet.
As for the summer signings, none of them were given a starting role in Chelsea’s recent loss to Manchester City. However, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall did come off the bench in a late attempt to influence the game. Mikel has questioned the wisdom behind signing Dewsbury-Hall, stating that he does not see how the midfielder improves the team.
“When I look at this team, Dewsbury-Hall. Again, I have nothing against this player, it’s not his fault, it was the club who brought him to the club, he cannot help Chelsea.”
Speaking to beIN SPORTS, Mikel reflected on the caliber of players signed during his time at Chelsea, name-dropping legends like Deco, Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko, Fernando Torres, and Florent Malouda. He emphasized that these were players brought in to elevate the squad, unlike Dewsbury-Hall, whom Mikel does not see as a significant upgrade.
However, there is an argument for Dewsbury-Hall to start Chelsea’s next match, particularly after the midfield imbalance seen against Manchester City. Enzo Fernandez seemed to struggle in his role, which appeared to be aimed at linking the midfield to the attack. Introducing Dewsbury-Hall into the starting lineup might allow him to provide more support to players like Cole Palmer, who had a quiet debut in the Premier League.
Mikel’s concerns highlight the broader issue of Chelsea’s struggles to find consistency and identity in a season where their signings and tactical approaches have come under scrutiny.
