Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil has shared his thoughts on the surprising departure of Mauricio Pochettino from Chelsea.
Pochettino’s Departure
Chelsea wrapped up their season with a fifth consecutive Premier League win, securing sixth place and a spot in European competition. However, just 48 hours after their victory over Bournemouth, the club announced that head coach Mauricio Pochettino had left by mutual consent. The Guardian reported that the split was due to differences in strategy between Pochettino and the club, with the decision being finalized after his end-of-season discussions with co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, as well as co-owner Behdad Eghbali.

Gary O’Neil expressed his surprise at the news, acknowledging Pochettino’s challenging task at Chelsea but remaining optimistic about the club’s future.
“I’m really, really surprised. I thought, especially the way they finished the season, they looked like a good side,” O’Neil told Sky Sports Premier League. “You talk about tough jobs and what I walked into at Wolves. But he walked into an incredibly tough changing room with so many players that had been signed and trying to keep them united. It was obviously going to take time. It seemed like they started to gain some momentum.
“Yeah, good manager. Really good club, special club Chelsea, one of the biggest in London. I’m sure they’ll find a good replacement. I expect Chelsea to be very strong next year. I expect Mauricio to find another good job and show what a great manager he is.”
Pochettino’s Year at Chelsea
Chelsea fans are still processing Pochettino’s exit. Despite a challenging season, the team showed signs of improvement in the final months. Here are some key stats from Pochettino’s tenure:
- Goal Scorers: Cole Palmer (25), Nicolas Jackson (17), and Raheem Sterling (10) were the only players to score double figures.
- Defensive Issues: Despite finding goals from various players, Chelsea struggled defensively, conceding 63 goals in the 38-game league season, a critical area for the next manager to address.
As Chelsea looks ahead to the next season, the club will be focused on finding a new manager and addressing the defensive weaknesses that plagued them this year. Meanwhile, Pochettino is expected to quickly find another role where he can continue to demonstrate his managerial skills.
