News from Chelsea: Todd Boehly’s decision to fire Graham Potter may give Christian Pulisic a second shot at Stamford Bridge.
Graham Potter has left Chelsea after less than seven months as manager. Todd Boehly reached his breaking point after the Blues’ weekend 2-0 Premier League loss to Aston Villa.
Potter managed 1.27 points per game in the league, the joint-lowest mark of any manager to take charge of 20 or more games for the club with Glen Hoddle. He won 12 of his 31 games in command at Stamford Bridge.
The decision to sever connections with Potter puts Boehly and fellow owners Clearlake Capital in their English endeavour back at the beginning. Additionally, it throws the futures of several Chelsea players in doubt.
Some may have the chance to perhaps resurrect their career in west London with the arrival of a new management. Christian Pulisic is one player in particular who will be keeping a close eye on the Potter replacement process.
The USMNT star struggled to establish himself in the Chelsea lineup under Potter’s leadership this season, and the January additions of Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk have raised questions about his future. In his 25 games this season, Pulisic has only started nine.
At the conclusion of the 2023–24 season, his contract in London expires, and there have been rumours that he might be one of the players permitted to go in the offseason. But, things could change for the American forward in the upcoming weeks.
The introduction of new concepts to Cobham could help Pulisic improve his situation at Chelsea. The 24-year-old has battled to establish himself as a staple in the starting Eleven for several managers since joining the club, frequently being linked with a transfer elsewhere.
Due to the abundance of possibilities in his position, Pulisic will have a difficult time making a name for himself in the Chelsea lineup. The fact that the players haven’t been consistent could give Pulisic a chance to emerge under coaches like Luis Enrique or Julian Nagelsmann.
The most likely outcome for Pulisic is to depart and find his form somewhere else. He was reportedly interested in a late transfer to Turkish club Galatasaray in January, but an injury at the beginning of the month all but put the rumour to rest.
The second half of the season has seen ongoing discussion over Pulisic’s future, and Chelsea supporters would be unhappy at him if he decided to leave the team. Prior to the summer, both Manchester United and AC Milan have been mentioned, and regardless of his contractual situation, any move would be expensive.
Potter has frequently expressed his support for Pulisic during his time at Stamford Bridge. With a new head coach, that might not be the case. Whatever transpires, the USA star must make a significant choice.
