The 2022–23 season has the potential to be remembered as one of the most spectacular in the history of football transfer fees thanks to a number of significant deals that have already been completed.
Erling Haaland’s €60 million move from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City does not rank among the top 50 biggest transfers of all time, but Aurelien Tchouameni and Darwin Nunez joined an elite group of players who moved for €100 million when they signed with Real Madrid and Liverpool, respectively.
Richarlison also entered the top 50 most expensive players ever after his club-record €70 million transfer from Everton to Tottenham, which was made public on July 1.
This continues a pattern that was started the previous year when some of the biggest contracts in football history were signed despite the Covid-19 epidemic and the financial troubles it brought about. These included the moves of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa to Manchester City and Romelu Lukaku from Inter to Chelsea.
Lukaku returned to Inter on loan only one year after completing a club-record-breaking move to Stamford Bridge.
Which moves in the history of football cost the most money?
Neymar to PSG
Neymar moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, becoming the most expensive football player in history.
The Brazilian left Camp Nou for PSG in a €222 million (£200 million) agreement to cap off a wonderful four-year run with Barca.
The first time a French club smashed the record for football transactions was with the signing of Neymar to PSG.
Since then, the biggest transactions have fallen well short of the mark.
The transfer of Kylian Mbappe from Monaco to PSG took place the same summer as Neymar’s, however it wasn’t finalized until 2018.
The 180 million euro transfer fee was the second-highest amount ever.
transmission of records globally
As a consequence of the transaction, Paul Pogba lost the title of the biggest transfer of all time to Neymar.
The previous record for the most expensive deal ever was broken when Pogba moved from Juventus to Manchester United in 2016.
