According to the Telegraph, Mauricio Pochettino is expected to change his usual approach to pre-season training at Chelsea to address a specific issue. The problem he faces is that he has inherited a relatively unfit squad.
It is reported that former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was surprised by the fitness levels of the players he inherited from his predecessor, Graham Potter. Lampard even had to deal with complaints from one player regarding additional running.
Normally, Pochettino would introduce the Gacon test during pre-season training. This test, developed by French fitness coach Georges Gacon, involves running for 45 seconds followed by a 15-second rest. The distance covered increases by 6.3 meters with each repetition, with the goal of improving endurance.
However, the Telegraph states that Pochettino and his assistant, Jesus Perez, will initially focus on strengthening the Chelsea players rather than immediately implementing the Gacon test. This approach aims to prevent any fitness breakdowns during the rigorous test.
This approach by Pochettino is seen as impressive, as he shows consideration for the challenging 2022/23 season that Chelsea experienced. Instead of completely disregarding what happened before his arrival, he aims to analyze and rectify the issues during pre-season. Pochettino and Perez have a history of creating high-intensity teams during their time at Tottenham, and Chelsea fans hope they can instill a similar energy as the club looks to bounce back in the upcoming 2023/24 campaign.
