Despite rumors that he may leave Chelsea, Petr Cech, the club’s technical director, believes Romelu Lukaku will have a “fantastic season” next season.
In an interview with Sky Sports, the Blues icon argued that the Belgian might still give supporters the most of what he has to offer at Stamford Bridge.
Lukaku’s form plummeted dramatically after a good start to his return to London, with the striker spending much of the second half of the season on the bench.
“I personally feel Romelu Lukaku will have a fantastic season,” the 40-year-old added.
“At first, we saw how large he can be, but a long-term injury he suffered in the game against Villa slowed everything down, and then he had covid as well.”
Lukaku fell out of favor with Thomas Tuchel for a few months due to fitness issues and an angry interview with Sky Italy, before returning to the first squad in time for the FA Cup final.
“We could see how powerful he is towards the end of the season when he was healthy and ready to go again,” Cech remarked.
“I am certain that Romelu Lukaku will recover and have a good season (next season).”
Despite the Czech Republican’s optimistic outlook for the future, speculations are swirling that Tuchel is prepared to move the striker this summer.
TCC’s Opinion
Chelsea’s ability to play a dominant brand of football with Lukaku as the focal point was demonstrated early in the season. The win over Arsenal demonstrated what a confident and fit version of the striker is capable of, as he bullied center-backs to both scores his own goals and put in others, such as Reece James, for the second goal of the game.
At the end of the season, Chelsea fans saw a glimpse of the force the 29-year-old can be and leaving the dead ball and crossing specialists like James and Mason Mount with no obvious target man to aim for seems like a waste of that potential avenue of attack, so having Lukaku back in top form would clearly benefit the Blues.
