“We need to talk” – Mauricio Pochettino says Chelsea need to discuss £110k-a-week player’s future at the club
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! As we head into the summer, the futures of several Chelsea players hang in the balance, with Raheem Sterling’s situation particularly uncertain.
Sterling has found himself on the bench for Chelsea’s last three Premier League matches, sparking speculation of a potential move to MLS.
Another player whose future is in question is Thiago Silva. His £110,000-a-week contract is set to expire this summer, and despite efforts to secure a new deal, no agreement has been reached. There were even voices within the Chelsea squad advocating for Silva’s return to the starting lineup in their recent draw against Sheffield United.
With the transfer window looming, there could be significant departures from Stamford Bridge. Silva appears likely to be among those leaving, although Mauricio Pochettino insists that discussions about his future are ongoing. Following Chelsea’s draw with Sheffield United, Pochettino stated, “I think it’s a thing that at the moment, so far, we are not talking about the future of the player in the squad. That is a decision the club needs to ask, we need to talk and agree the future. He is one of the players we need to discuss. Nothing so far.”
Despite Silva’s goal in the match against Sheffield United, it’s unlikely to alter the outcome of his future at Chelsea. After four years with the club, it appears Silva will bid farewell to west London at the end of the season.
However, Pochettino will still have plenty of defensive options at his disposal, including Axel Disasi, Levi Colwill, and Benoit Badiashile, ensuring that the squad remains well-equipped even in Silva’s absence.
