Kai Havertz of Chelsea was benched for Germany’s 1-1 tie with Spain after starting the team’s 2-1 loss to Japan.
Havertz didn’t even make the bench as Germany pushed for an equalizer against Spain to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
Havertz came under fire from Alan Shearer, who blamed his performance against Japan for his exclusion from the Germany squad’s match against Spain.
“When you look at the stats from Germany’s most recent game, the final third is where they let themselves down. They had 26 shots and Havertz didn’t get one, according to Shearer.
“That is not acceptable for a forward, therefore Hansi Flick had to change his strategy tonight. The former Newcastle striker continued, “It’s not surprising that he’s moved on for experience.
