Chelsea made their intentions clear as the transfer deadline loomed, focusing on upgrading one key area of the pitch—bringing in a striker.
Pursuing Victor Osimhen
The Blues had their sights set on signing Victor Osimhen, with considerable efforts being made to secure the prolific forward. However, in the final hours of the transfer window, Chelsea opted to walk away from the deal, having realized they couldn’t reach an agreement that suited their terms.
Considering Ivan Toney as an Alternative
Throughout the summer, and particularly in the final days of the window, Chelsea also had their eye on Ivan Toney as a potential option. However, Toney ultimately chose a move to Saudi Arabia, where he’s set to earn around £400,000 per week.
Chelsea’s Concerns Over Ivan Toney’s Fit
Although Toney was a serious target, Chelsea’s management had doubts about whether bringing him in would significantly improve the squad. According to Matt Law on the ‘London is Blue’ podcast, the club wasn’t convinced Toney would be a notable upgrade over their current striker, Nicolas Jackson. As Law explained, “Chelsea didn’t believe Ivan Toney would be a substantial improvement over Jackson.”
Putting Trust in Nicolas Jackson
With no new striker signed, Chelsea has shown confidence in Nicolas Jackson, their Senegalese forward. Jackson’s performances early in the season have already silenced many doubters, with him scoring in two consecutive Premier League games. His strong start to life in the Premier League has even earned him a new contract, with enhanced wages, following a similar path as Cole Palmer.
Looking Ahead: Jackson’s Potential and Future Transfer Plans
Chelsea believes they’ve landed a great deal with Jackson, and there’s plenty of excitement around his potential. However, the Blues may not be done searching for a star forward. Reports suggest that the club could reignite their interest in Osimhen when the transfer window reopens in January, making the next few months critical for both the team and Jackson himself.
