“We can’t continue using him as No. 9” – Todd Boehly comments on Chelsea’s efforts to sign a new striker this summer, ‘we are trying’…
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Chelsea fans have made it clear that they are eager for the club to strengthen one key position at the end of the season—the striker role.
Since Todd Boehly and his team took over in 2022, Chelsea has yet to make a serious long-term investment in a top-class center forward. While Nicolas Jackson has been a positive addition, doubts remain about whether he has the credentials to lead the line for a team with Premier League title ambitions.
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has been vocal about his concerns, previously urging the club to sign Victor Osimhen before a potential deadline-day move fell through. Meanwhile, manager Enzo Maresca has had to get creative following Jackson’s injury, which has left the squad without a recognized first-team striker.
Pedro Neto has impressed when filling in up front, contributing a goal and an assist in two appearances. However, this makeshift solution is unlikely to be viable in the long term.
Club owner Boehly has acknowledged the difficulties in securing a top striker, explaining:
“Strikers are hard to find. You don’t go into the grocery store and find a striker. It is a unique skill set and is hard to find. We are trying to balance short-term and long-term, but we’re thinking in years.”
In last summer’s transfer window, Chelsea signed Marc Guiu, who shone in the Conference League group stages as the competition’s top scorer. However, the young Spaniard is seen as a prospect for the future, and expecting him to lead the line as a teenager would be a significant burden.
Maresca appears to have identified his preferred target, repeatedly mentioning Liam Delap in conversations about a potential new striker. Delap is enjoying an impressive first season in Premier League football, making him an attractive option for Chelsea.
Meanwhile, the door remains open for a former target. Mikel has suggested that Osimhen is still keen on a move to Stamford Bridge despite his current loan spell at Galatasaray.
For many Chelsea fans, the dream signing would be Alexander Isak. However, prying him away from Newcastle would likely require a record-breaking transfer fee.
As the summer window approaches, all eyes will be on Chelsea’s next move in their search for a world-class striker.
