“Total waste of money” – Gary Neville reacts after what he’s seen happening at Chelsea behind the scenes
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Gary Neville has raised concerns about Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, suggesting that changes may be on the horizon given the club’s recent transfer activities and lack of success.
During an episode of The Gary Neville Podcast, the former Manchester United defender expressed his belief that alterations might be imminent at Stamford Bridge in terms of their operational approach and personnel handling transfer matters. He deemed the current state of affairs unsustainable.
In the last transfer window, Chelsea continued their trend of substantial spending by acquiring players like Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia for significant fees. This comes after an active January period where the club added Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk to their roster.
Despite these considerable signings, Chelsea finds themselves in 14th place in the Premier League.
Neville advocated for a shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy, asserting that the club should move away from the focus on acquiring numerous young prospects for the future. Instead, he emphasized the importance of securing one or two proven footballers capable of making an immediate impact.
In a recent report by The Telegraph, it was highlighted that Chelsea had a policy of not acquiring players over the age of 25 during the summer. Neville pointed out that this approach prevented the club from considering options like James Maddison, who has been performing exceptionally well at Tottenham Hotspur.
While not laying the blame solely on Stewart and Winstanley, who hold the positions of sporting directors, Neville stressed that questions would inevitably arise regarding their performance if the recruits continued to struggle on the field.
