The approaching months will be crucial for Thomas Tuchel to strengthen Chelsea ahead of the 2022/23 season, with the team in need of reconstruction. The defense, midfield, and attack all appear to require additional investment, and ensuring the first window of the new era runs smoothly will be difficult given Chelsea’s current position.
Following my colleague Bobby Vincent’s fantasy window, which you can read here, I’m going to leave Jules Kounde and Declan Rice off my list because they’re both clear to most Chelsea supporters and will be on most lists.
Instead, I’ve chosen three players that would assist strengthen the squad’s quality in important places, add fresh attributes in areas where they are desperately needed, and guarantee the Blues are investing wisely while also enabling Cobham talent to shine.
The most well-known name on this list, and one who would undoubtedly pique interest if he chose to join the Blues this summer. Since January, when news of his unwillingness to accept a new deal with Barcelona surfaced, the French winger has been connected.
I was originally skeptical about Dembele, owing to his history of injury problems at the Nou Camp. However, his second half of the season could be exciting, as he has become a rather lethal presence down the right-wing with 12 goal contributions since February.
Tuchel needs a creative maverick in this assault, someone who can take risks and boost the productivity that his existing cast has been missing. With the possibility of him leaving Barcelona on a free transfer and still being just 25, the investment does not appear to be a waste for a player who gelled so well with Tuchel at Dortmund.
Sosa Borna
Chelsea requires players who can enhance the starting lineup as well as backup and rotational alternatives, which has become a problem after critical injuries limited Tuchel’s choices during the winter. Tuchel’s approach requires mobile wingbacks who can maintain a high level of pressure throughout the game and offer breadth to stretch deep-lying defenses.
Borna Sosa of Stuttgart is a well-known figure in the transfer market, with Chelsea reportedly keeping an eye on him this season. If Romelu Lukaku stays at Stamford Bridge, Sosa’s crossing ability might be crucial. Sosa’s stats are similar to those of Ben Chilwell, the guy with whom he’d be competing.
Via FBRef, his rate of shot-creating actions (3.71) is somewhat lower than Chilwell’s pre-injury statistic of 2.86, but he outperforms Chilwell in terms of progressive passes and carries.
Bremer, Gleison
Chelsea is allegedly searching for two defenders this summer, with a left-sided defender being especially important following the departure of Antonio Rudiger.
Promoting Levi Colwill seems like a no-brainer, but adding a more experienced and adaptable leader might improve options even further. Bremer has been monitored by Chelsea this season, according to Football.london, and as an aggressive centre-back who has played on the left side of a back three this season, he would likely be a substitute for Rudiger if an offer is made.
Bremer has played in a back-five for Torino and is considered as one of the best in Serie A. He has been linked with a number of teams this summer and might be another clever Italian acquisition following Roma’s Rudiger.
