Bayern Munich’s Sadio Mane is reportedly set to leave the German club after just one season, following a bust-up with his teammate Leroy Sane. Clubs across Europe are said to be registering transfer interest in the former Liverpool star, and Chelsea is reportedly plotting a summer transfer swoop. The Blues are expected to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their new head coach and the Argentine has ordered Todd Boehly to pursue a deal for Mane. Although no agreement has been reached yet, Chelsea has held positive talks with Pochettino.
Mane, who spent six years at Liverpool, is considered to be a Liverpool icon after winning every club trophy possible with the Merseyside outfit. The Senegal international left Liverpool to join Bayern last summer, but he has scored just 12 goals and provided five assists in 36 appearances in his debut season.
Bayern are open to selling Mane, and it is unclear whether the player would be open to a return to a Premier League rival of Liverpool given his affiliation with Jurgen Klopp’s side. However, reports suggest that a bid of £30 million could be enough to seal a deal.
Pochettino wants to sign a new goalkeeper, central midfielder, and striker if he is appointed as manager of Chelsea. Mane has played as a No.9 before, and his versatility could be a key asset for Chelsea next season if they can agree on a deal with the player and Bayern. Although Pochettino left Southampton four months prior to Mane’s arrival at St. Mary’s Stadium in 2014, the pair could finally work together next season at Stamford Bridge.
Mane’s departure from Bayern could pave the way for the German champions to pursue a move for Borussia Dortmund’s star striker Erling Haaland. The Norwegian is one of the most sought-after players in world football and has been linked with a host of top clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are also said to be interested in signing Haaland, with Pochettino reportedly keen to build his new team around the 20-year-old. However, any move for Haaland would likely cost the London club upwards of £100million.
With Chelsea already having a wealth of attacking options, including Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, and Christian Pulisic, it remains to be seen whether they will prioritize signing another forward this summer. But with Pochettino’s reported desire to bring in a new No.9, and the potential availability of players like Mane and Haaland, the Blues could be set for a busy transfer window.
As for Mane, a return to Liverpool has also been rumored, with some reports suggesting that the Reds could look to bring the Senegal international back to Anfield this summer. However, it remains to be seen whether Mane would be open to such a move, given the manner in which he left the club last year.
