Gallagher’s Future in the Spotlight
Conor Gallagher’s name has been buzzing within the Chelsea fanbase recently. There have been numerous reports suggesting he might be on the move, with Aston Villa mentioned as a possible destination, while others say he’s staying put. Gallagher, who thrived under Mauricio Pochettino last season with five goals and seven assists in 37 starts, is expected to perform similarly under new manager Enzo Maresca. However, another Chelsea player, Raheem Sterling, might not have such a secure future at the club.
The Cost of Raheem Sterling
In the summer of 2022, Raheem Sterling left Manchester City to start a new chapter at Chelsea. The English winger joined the Blues after a successful stint at City, where he scored 13 goals and made five assists in 23 starts. Sterling was Thomas Tuchel’s top transfer target and joined Chelsea for £47.5 million, a relatively reasonable fee considering Chelsea’s recent spending. Sterling signed a five-year deal with a weekly salary of £325,000, making him the highest earner at the club, according to Capology.
Sterling’s Market Value in 2024
Sterling’s first season at Chelsea was challenging. Expectations were high, but the club’s turbulent environment didn’t help. Tuchel was sacked shortly after Sterling’s arrival, and his successor, Graham Potter, also had a brief stint. As a result, Sterling scored only six goals in 28 games that season. Last season, his performance improved slightly with eight goals and four assists in 22 starts, but he still wasn’t a regular starter.
Sterling’s market value has decreased significantly since joining Chelsea. According to CIES Football Observatory, his current value is around £34 million, much less than the £47.5 million Chelsea paid for him. In contrast, Gallagher is valued at £51 million. Other Chelsea attackers like Noni Madueke, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Cole Palmer, and Nicolas Jackson are also worth more than Sterling, with only Christopher Nkunku valued less in the attacking department.
Sterling’s exclusion from England’s 2024 European Championship squad further reflects his diminished value. As he approaches 30 and is not a guaranteed starter, his market value is expected to continue declining. Given his high salary and reduced impact on the team, Chelsea might consider offloading him this summer to free up funds and make room for new talent.
In summary, while Gallagher’s future at Chelsea remains a hot topic, Sterling’s decreasing value and high wages make him a prime candidate for a summer transfer. The club’s decisions in the coming months will be crucial in shaping their squad for the next season.
