Todd Boehly list who Chelsea should sign next summer window Cristiano Ronaldo’s plan B open
Graham Potter is the latest man to be tasked with improving Chelsea’s underperforming attack.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! It’s too early to tell, but if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang isn’t the man to lead Chelsea’s attack beyond this season, Graham Potter will have the opportunity to provide his own solution to the club’s goal-scoring problems, which have persisted for over five years.
The new manager is working with Aubameyang after Thomas Tuchel pushed hard for his signing in the summer window to bolster his attacking options, and the already risky transfer now appears even more uncertain.
Given that Potter will be working through and determining his feelings about his Chelsea team in the coming weeks, it is likely that Aubameyang will be a common name on the teamsheet once he regains fitness, but Armando Broja is pushing hard for a starting spot after impressing in training and his small cameos so far this season.
Potter, who has a track record of developing players and has already helped Danny Welbeck to his best scoring returns in the last eight years, has more quality at Chelsea, but even he may struggle to get a historically underperforming group to fire.
If Potter’s magic fails, he’s been told where to look for new options. “They should be looking for a 22-year-old or a 23-year-old somewhere in Europe,” Stan Collymore told BirminghamMail in April. “If not, [Ollie] Watkins or his [Aston] Villa strike partner [Danny] Ings, if they’re willing to get older.” That type of player would score 20 to 25 goals in that team, and those goals would propel Chelsea one step closer to their goals.”
The irony is that Chelsea has had several players who were expected to score 20 goals only to fail. Over £300m has been spent on various goal scorers, whether due to creativity issues, finishing mistakes, or a system not designed for certain players.
Last season, Ings had a poor season for Villa, scoring only seven goals. In his previous two seasons, he scored 34 goals, with a high of 22 at Southampton. Watkins had 11 last season after having 14 in his first year at Villa. Both have England caps, though Ings has only played three times since his debut in 2015 and hasn’t been called up since 2020.
Watkins is a more recent addition to Gareth Southgate’s squad, having appeared seven times in the last 18 months and scoring twice. The 26-year-old, however, was not included in the most recent squad and is unlikely to play in the World Cup this winter. Aside from the prospect of Champions League football and possibly being given a bigger chance at Stamford Bridge now that Potter is in charge, part of their own appeal to Chelsea is that if their scoring improves, being at Chelsea will help their future international prospects.
Todd Boehly, on the other hand, was eager to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, who is seven years older than Ings at 37, and the Portuguese is still expected to be a success. Former France defender Frank Leboeuf told ESPN, “I think he [Ronaldo] can serve another club.”
“I would have loved to have seen him play for Chelsea; I believe Chelsea would have been good for him because he would have been served, but I’m not sure how it will work with [Erik] ten Hag.
“I believe he has enough money to go for free, as I discussed when he was at Juventus, and he should have done so instead of trying to get more money, where everyone can agree that he has enough, especially with his endorsements.
“He doesn’t need a salary, so he can travel wherever he wants. Because everyone will be pleased to have a player like him, especially since they will not have to pay him because he will serve. He can go to big, prestigious clubs, and I believe he can serve them.
“If Chelsea can’t find the striker they want and Aubameyang isn’t working for them, he might be able to go there for free. He would have the opportunity to play in the Champions League again, which he desires. I wish him the best, and I believe he deserves it because he has been one of the best strikers in the world, if not the best.”
Ronaldo is currently used as a rotational option by Manchester United, but he still wants to play in Europe’s top club competition.
