Ally McCoist has pointed out the impressive form of two Chelsea players as a key reason why things are looking much brighter at Stamford Bridge this season.
Chelsea’s Young Talent Starting to Shine
Over recent years, Chelsea has built a talented, youthful squad, but under new ownership, the team initially struggled to find its rhythm. Thankfully, the 2024/25 campaign has started off on a much more positive note, with head coach Enzo Maresca, 44, guiding the squad to both strong performances and positive results, winning over the fanbase.
After the Blues’ latest Premier League victory at home against Brighton, the overall mood around the club has shifted. Even Jamie Carragher, speaking on The Overlap, admitted he’s been surprised by how well Chelsea have performed this season.
McCoist Praises Caicedo and Fernandez
Speaking on talkSPORT, Ally McCoist highlighted the vast improvement of midfielders Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez as central to Chelsea’s turnaround.
“I thought Chelsea completely underachieved last year. I wasn’t happy at all with the performances of Caicedo and Fernandez,” McCoist explained. “For a quarter of a billion pounds, I was expecting more. But now, there’s been a massive improvement in their play, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.”
A Midfield in Form
We agree that Caicedo and Fernandez are crucial to Chelsea’s current form. Fernandez, who joined Chelsea in January 2023 from Benfica for a staggering £107 million (according to the BBC), had an inconsistent start in his Blues career. However, this season, he’s catching the eye as the team’s stand-in captain, showcasing his leadership and skill in midfield.
Meanwhile, Caicedo arrived from Brighton in a record-breaking £115 million transfer last summer (according to the BBC). Although his Chelsea career had a slow beginning, he’s gradually finding his feet, and his performances this year justify his hefty price tag.
Competition in the Midfield
While Romeo Lavia’s arrival adds competition in the middle of the park, the partnership between Caicedo and Fernandez has proven to be effective, both in defense and attack. When they’re in sync, Chelsea’s midfield looks cohesive and dominant, which has been key to the team’s improvement so far this season.
As Chelsea continues to progress under Maresca, it’s clear that these two midfielders will be central to their success.
