Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta cost his team immediately after the restart as his blunder allowed Richarlison to score past a helpless Edouard Mendy.
Chelsea was never able to get back into the game, and an enraged Thomas Tuchel has now instructed his team to avoid making careless errors.
“We surrendered in the opening minute of the second half, and things are becoming tougher,” says the coach. It was completely unnecessary for us to give this goal away from the manner we did. “If we keep throwing goals away, we’ll keep getting the results we’ve been getting recently,” Tuchel remarked.
“We despise losing; we are accountable for it; it was our obligation at Old Trafford not to lose any more – we struggle to keep clean sheets and put in top performances on a consistent basis, and that is why we lost tonight.”
“We must be error-free, disciplined in our views, and avoid making mistakes.”
“With that much possession, we didn’t play our greatest game, but we were in command, and then we conceded a goal, which ends the game for us because it’s exactly what the opponent wants.” In our season, it’s a tremendous pattern.
“In the previous two weeks, we’ve played four games and only kept one clean sheet; this needs to change – if we attempt to get away with OK performances, that’s not good for us; we’re a team that needs to be at the top of its game in every match.” We lose games if we try to get away with doing OK.
“In the previous four matches, you can see how we battle with concentration and resolve.”
