Shock move Thomas Tuche challenge Chelsea boss Graham Potter as Next England manager odds: favorite to replace Gareth Southgate
Following England’s elimination from the 2022 World Cup, Gareth Southgate is anticipated to decide on his own future in the upcoming weeks, and Chelsea manager Graham Potter is being backed to take the role if he does so.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Gareth Southgate’s future has been the subject of discussion following England’s World Cup quarterfinal loss to France.
In the wake of his team’s 2-1 loss to France on Saturday night, the Three Lions manager wouldn’t rule out leaving. It was a painful loss, as England played especially well in the second half before Harry Kane missed a last-second penalty and destroyed England’s chances.
Southgate, however, may feel that he has led the squad as far as he can after six years in charge and may want to hand the reins to someone else. The England team’s fortunes have significantly improved over this time, with a semi-final World Cup finish in 2018 and a sad loss on penalties at Euro 2020 at Wembley.
Some may view England’s quarterfinal loss as a setback, but many will be considering the future under Southgate given the way in which they were defeated, their performance, and the caliber of the opponents they faced. But after the loss, the former Middlesbrough manager talked about a difficult past 18 months when considering his future.
He said, “I’ve found a lot of the last 18 months difficult. “Despite everything I’ve enjoyed about the recent weeks, I still have how things have been for the past 18 months, including what has been said and published about the night at Wolves [the 4-0 Nations League loss to Hungary at Molineux].
If it’s the right decision to stay, I want to make sure that I have the stamina to do it because there are many things in my thoughts that are currently very conflicting.
The list of potential candidates is quite short, and the best English managers already have stable positions. Despite only taking over at Stamford Bridge in September, Graham Potter has already been the bookmakers’ favorite. Betfair has the Chelsea manager pegged as a 7/2 favorite.
Eddie Howe (4/1), Mauricio Pochettino (5/1), and Steve Cooper (6/1), all former Tottenham managers, are listed behind him. Pochettino is currently jobless after leaving PSG in the summer. Former England players are also included; Steven Gerrard is listed at 14/1, while Frank Lampard is offered at 11/1.
Euro 2022 Success Sarina Wiegmann, the manager of the Lionesses, is also included on the list as a trailblazing champion of back-to-back European Championships, first with the Netherlands and then this summer with England.
