Chelsea vs. Wrexham: A Pre-Season Clash
On Wednesday night, Chelsea began their pre-season tour in the U.S. with a friendly against League One’s Wrexham at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The match ended in an exciting 2-2 draw. Chelsea’s goals came from Christopher Nkunku and Lesley Ugochukwu, while Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott scored for Wrexham. However, Chelsea fans were not pleased with full-back Ben Chilwell’s performance.
Fans’ Reactions on Social Media
Discontent with Chilwell
Fans took to social media to express their frustration with Chilwell. One fan bluntly stated, “Sell Chilwell while we’re at it.” Another added, “Chilwell at fault. This was worth waking up for.”
A third fan was adamant, “Chilwell can 100% not play LCB again, please sell.” Another simply wrote, “Just get rid of Chilwell, sell that guy now.” A fifth fan commented, “Chilwell not suited for this system.”
Manager’s Perspective
Maresca on Defensive Style
Post-match, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was questioned about the defensive lapses due to his playing style. He responded, “Hopefully, not too many. It is one of the risks that you have trying to build from behind.”
Maresca further elaborated, “I have no doubt. I think you are going to concede in different ways, so you need to decide in which way you need to concede a goal.” He also mentioned, “Sometimes teams that try to build from the back concede goals but I think you are going to score more than you concede.”
Team Identity
“For sure, we did many things we can improve, but we started just two weeks ago. Tonight was important to start seeing the identity of the team and the identity is there,” Maresca added.
Upcoming Matches
Chelsea’s pre-season continues this weekend against Celtic. The Blues will also face Club America, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan in the coming weeks. Their Premier League campaign for the 24/25 season will kick off with a home game against City at Stamford Bridge.
