After the USA was defeated 3-1 by the Netherlands in the round of 16, Christian Pulisic’s World Cup is over. The Chelsea star, who put on some impressive performances during the group stages against teams like England, Wales, and Iran, will now rejoin the Blues.
Midway through the second half, with the Netherlands leading 2-0 thanks to goals from Memphis Depay and Daley Blind, Pulisic contributed an assist as Haji Wright made it 2-1. Denzel Dumfries, who might join Pulisic at Chelsea in January, added to his two assists in the 81st minute to make it 3-1 and seal the victory.
The 24-year-old is now the newest Chelsea player to be eliminated from the competition in Qatar as Graham Potter works to get his team ready for the start of Premier League play on Boxing Day. The second half of the season will begin on Tuesday, December 27, when the Blues play Bournemouth.
After the final whistle of the game against the Netherlands was blown, Pulisic’s teammates all rushed to comfort their captain. Prior to the crucial round of 16 match, the 24-year-old was a serious injury concern but was declared fit after sustaining a groyne injury in the 1-0 victory over Iran earlier this week.
Pulisic is undoubtedly a team favourite and a respected member of the locker room. After the game, USA manager Gregg Berhalter could be seen comforting his captain as they left the field together.
When the Premier League resumes later this month, Potter will be hoping that Pulisic can carry over the outstanding form he displayed at the World Cup into his performances for the Blues.
