Chelsea extended their recent run of success on Tuesday night against AC Milan under new manager Graham Potter. Early on, the game was a stop-start affair, but after 20 minutes, when former Blues defender Fikayo Tomori was sent off for a challenge on Mason Mount in the area, the game took a turn for the worst.
A few minutes later, Jorginho converted the ensuing penalty kick before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doubled the visitors’ lead by capping off a fast move. In front of a home crowd at the San Siro, the game could have easily become tense, but Chelsea maintained control and earned all three points.
In looking back on the game, Potter stated, “We performed well overall. “The goal was crucial, as the penalty and red card changed the game’s dynamic. We began to count on the ten men, and I believe we did a good job of it. Overall, we’re happy with the three points, the spotless record, and the two goals we scored.”
After a sluggish start to their European campaign, the victory saw the Blues top the group, which may have appeared improbable only a few games earlier. Similar to the rematch against the Rossoneri, there are many positives, but there is also a serious injury worry.
Midway through the second half, defender Reece James suffered a knee injury and, while continuing, soon had to be pulled out. The injury may cause anxiety while they wait for the results given the defender’s busy schedule of games and chances of earning a World Cup spot.
James has since put a hopeful message on social media, saying on Twitter: “Fingers crossed it’s not a bad one. Love for all the messages, I appreciate you all.”
Chelsea boss Potter has said the club will know more in the next two days, but until then there will continue to be concerns surrounding the fitness of a player so pivotal to the side.
