Popular Chelsea man, dies after suffering a heart attack while undertaking a charity walk on a pilgrimage route in Spain

The 74-year-old, a former Warrant Officer Class 1 in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, had a distinguished 22-year military career, serving in UN Peacekeeping missions in Cyprus and completing four tours of Northern Ireland during the Troubles.
After his military service, Rick joined The Royal Hospital in Chelsea in 2015, following in his father’s footsteps. He was a beloved figure at the hospital, known for his passion for painting, support for the local football team, and pride in his Chelsea pensioner roots. Rick’s daughter, Alison, described him as a humorous and family-oriented individual, finding solace in the knowledge that he passed away while pursuing his love for travel.
Governor of the Royal Hospital, General Sir Adrian Bradshaw, praised Rick’s selfless attitude and dedication to helping others. At the time of his passing, Rick was raising funds for service charities during his walk on the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route that has gained renewed popularity in recent years.
