Pochettino set to announce new Chelsea captain decision after Cesar Azpilicueta departure
Mauricio Pochettino, the new manager of Chelsea, is seeking leaders to emerge from the dressing room as he considers who will replace the departing Cesar Azpilicueta as the club captain.
Azpilicueta is on the verge of a free transfer to Atletico Madrid, bringing an end to his 11-year tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino will make a final decision on the new captain during pre-season as he familiarizes himself with the players. He emphasized the need for leadership and stated that he wants individuals who are not followers, but leaders in every aspect of the team.
Thiago Silva is the top contender to assume the captaincy role, having previously captained the team in Azpilicueta’s absence last season. He has also captained the Brazilian national team.
Other potential candidates for the captaincy in the young squad, which lacks natural leaders, include Kepa Arrizabalaga, Raheem Sterling, and Reece James.
Former vice-captain Jorginho was sold to Arsenal in January, and players like N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, and Mason Mount, who have previously worn the armband, will not be at the club next season.
Pochettino is also emphasizing the importance of commitment from his players as he seeks to rebuild after last season’s disappointments. He believes that with unity and dedication, combined with the support of the fans, Chelsea can find success once again.
