Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi has openly expressed his displeasure over the departure of Moises Caicedo to Chelsea this summer. Speaking to TNT Sports, De Zerbi acknowledged that losing a player of Caicedo’s caliber before the start of the season was a significant blow for the Seagulls.
Despite facing interest from Liverpool, Caicedo made a record transfer to Chelsea in the Premier League. While he might not have reached the pinnacle of his form with the Seagulls just yet, he has quickly become an integral part of the Chelsea squad.
The impact of Caicedo’s absence was keenly felt in Chelsea’s recent defeat to Newcastle, highlighting his importance to the team. De Zerbi conceded that Brighton underwent substantial changes compared to the previous season, losing key players.
Expressing his sentiments on Caicedo’s departure, De Zerbi stated, “I am sorry to lose great players. Caicedo and Mac Allister, I am not happy. But I know very well where I am working, and the policy of the club is like this.”
He elaborated on the tactical adjustments made, noting that last season, Mac Allister often played as a number 10, providing more control over the game. However, this season, the team is structured with four attackers—Joao Pedro, Ansu Fati, Evan Ferguson, and Welbeck—none of whom function as a traditional number 10. The emphasis now lies on their goal-scoring instincts when in possession.
Looking ahead, the Blues anticipate facing Brighton at Stamford Bridge, seeking a return to winning ways in the Premier League. This encounter marks the first time Caicedo will face his former club in the league, and both teams will be eager for a positive outcome, perhaps hoping for a better reunion than Marc Cucurella experienced when returning to Brighton last season.
