Chelsea defender Malo Gusto has pushed back against the ongoing criticism of the club’s large squad, emphasizing the importance of having plenty of quality players available. Gusto believes that having a deep bench is crucial, saying, “It’s good to be able to make changes because otherwise, we will die.”
Chelsea’s squad size has raised eyebrows this season, with ongoing questions about the notion of “A” and “B” teams. But in today’s game, depth is vital as top clubs face packed schedules, often competing across multiple leagues and tournaments.
Gusto Backs Chelsea’s Big Roster
Coach Enzo Maresca has managed to rotate between competitions, fielding different lineups in the Premier League and cup matches. While he’s played down the idea of having set first and second teams, evidence shows a pattern of rotation.
For now, the squad size hasn’t been an issue, as Chelsea is still early in cup competitions. However, with the team already out of the Carabao Cup, fewer games are available for the so-called “B” team. As the Blues advance in the Conference League, Maresca may face challenges with lineup choices, especially if they reach the Champions League next season where rotation is less feasible.
There are some signs of dissatisfaction. Joao Felix, for instance, expressed frustration by removing his sock ties when he wasn’t subbed on against Arsenal, and Christopher Nkunku is rumored to be reconsidering his future with the club.
Gusto Emphasizes the Need for Depth
Despite the concerns, Gusto is firm on the value of Chelsea’s roster depth. In an interview reported by The Guardian, he said, “People don’t understand it’s essential to have many players with quality.” He continued, “We’re playing in the Conference League and several cups. It’s good to have options for rotation because otherwise, we will wear ourselves out. It’s beneficial for the team. We’re focused on staying united and creating something special together to win.”
