Since he could be missing nine players for Wednesday’s Champions League match against Chelsea, AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli anticipates a difficult matchup.
Milan defeated Empoli 3-1 this past weekend to win their league game, much as Chelsea did.
However, the defending Serie A winners paid a high price for the victory.
Simon Kjaer, Davide Calabria, and Alexis Saelemaekers all sustained injuries throughout the game.
With nine players likely out of the Chelsea game, this deepens the number of ailments at Milan (via Sky Italia).
Despite acknowledging that after seeing Chelsea defeat Crystal Palace 2-1, Pioli is still optimistic in his club, he does anticipate a difficult opponent.
AC Milan’s Pioli predicts difficulty vs Chelsea.
The Milan manager said on Saturday to Sky Italia, “Injuries may happen in a hard season.”
“However, I am fortunate to have a large group of players who are all available and have the correct outlook.
We need to work hard, so let’s conserve as much energy as we can now that I saw Chelsea.
Even if Chelsea are in a lot better condition, they are not completely healthy.
Marc Cucurella, N’Golo Kante, and Edouard Mendy were not present at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
The Blues will also have a lot riding on their victory on Wednesday because they have only one point from their first two games and are now last in Group E.
Milan, though, is in first place in the division with four points.
