After Olivier Giroud gave Les Bleus a late lead, the Chelsea star entered the game as a second-half replacement and won his team’s second penalty before Harry Kane missed from 12 yards.
Prior to being replaced early in the match against Wales by Jordan Henderson, the 23-year-old started the previous two group games. Gareth Southgate chose to play it safe in the middle of the field against Senegal, so he didn’t start either. In 2018, Mount played for Vitesse Arnhem in Holland as a teen. This was his first senior World Cup.
Even under Graham Potter, Mount has not had the best of seasons so far for Chelsea and has had trouble getting going, but he is still an important component of his domestic and international setup.
Mount is a regular goal threat from deep or as a makeshift forward, with five goals in 36 outings for his country, including a spectacular goal against Germany in the Nations League earlier this season, but he hasn’t been able to find his best form this season.
He will now return to England, where club football training has once again begun with the Blues playing Bournemouth on December 27.
In a tweet earlier, Mount had written: “Waking up today, it still stings just as much… the spirit and determination of this team have been nothing short of inspirational, we wanted to go further, but it wasn’t to be.”
Mount will undoubtedly be one of the groups of young, bright players available to England who will attempt to win the World Cup once more in 2026.
