Following Tyrone Mings’ shoddy clearing, Mount gave Chelsea an early lead at Villa Park. Mount then clinched the victory with a deft free kick in the second half.
Mount held up James’ number as he celebrated his second goal, making it clear that he was honouring the defender, who is anticipated to miss eight weeks of action due to a knee ligament injury.
Later, Mount texted his clubmate and England teammate another social media message.
After the game, Mount posted a story to Instagram with the message, “For you, brother @reecejames.”
James’ injury situation was updated by Blues manager Graham Potter in his post-game press conference.
James will wear a brace for four weeks, according to the manager (via Football London).
“It’s all I know for sure about how the next four weeks will go for him, and that has ramifications for what he needs to do to continue becoming ready.
But all we need to do right now is get him back with our assistance.
James himself doesn’t appear to have given up hope of competing in the 2018 World Cup.
“We are in a race against time… But we’re not going to give up,” the England player tweeted on Sunday.
