Manchester United has announced that Mason Greenwood will be leaving the club following an internal investigation into allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault against him. The nature of Greenwood’s exit from the club has not been specified.
In a statement, Manchester United stated that all parties involved, including Greenwood, recognized the difficulties in his resuming his career at the club. It was mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to continue his career away from Old Trafford, and the club will work with Greenwood to facilitate this outcome.
Greenwood, a 21-year-old forward who came through Manchester United’s academy, had been suspended from training and matches during the internal investigation. The investigation followed the discontinuation of the case against him by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The CPS stated that a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material led to the discontinuation of the case.
Greenwood last played for Manchester United in January 2022. He has one senior cap for England, having played in the Nations League match against Iceland in September 2020.
The statement from Manchester United also noted the club’s commitment to supporting both the alleged victim and Greenwood as they seek to move forward positively with their lives.
The decision to part ways with Greenwood follows a period of extensive investigation and consideration, with a focus on respecting the rights and perspectives of all involved parties.
The alleged victim had requested the police to drop their investigation in April 2022. The club considered various outcomes over the past six months, including the possibility of Greenwood’s reintegration into the team. However, it was determined that his career should continue away from Manchester United.
Manchester United CEO Richard Arnold acknowledged the complexity of the case, the club’s duty of care towards both parties involved, and the need to minimize disruption to the teams. He emphasized the importance of respecting the rights and wishes of the alleged victim throughout the process.
Women’s Aid, an organization working to end domestic abuse, expressed relief at the news and emphasized the importance of football clubs taking a wider approach to address domestic and sexual abuse and promoting attitudes that stand against sexism and misogyny.
Greenwood also released a statement in which he accepted responsibility for his mistakes and expressed his intention to be a better person and a good father. He thanked Manchester United for their support throughout his time at the club.
