Chelsea’s Transfer Moves: Could They Beat Man United to a Star Striker?
Manchester United is reportedly anxious that Chelsea might swoop in to sign a £50 million-rated striker during the final weeks of the summer transfer window.
Chelsea’s Quest for a Prolific Striker
Chelsea has long been on the hunt for a prolific center-forward to spearhead their attack, but finding the right fit has been a challenge. Nicolas Jackson had a promising debut season last year, scoring 17 goals across all competitions. His overall play is impressive, and he puts in a lot of effort, but he isn’t a natural goal machine.
In a recent interview reported by Football.London, Enzo Maresca emphasized that he views Jackson as a central striker.
There are widespread media reports suggesting that Chelsea is set to sign forward Samu Omorodion from Atletico Madrid to strengthen their attacking options. In fact, journalist Fabrizio Romano announced on X that the Omorodion deal is complete, pending official confirmation from the clubs involved.
Manchester United’s Concerns Over Evan Ferguson
According to The Daily Star, Manchester United is considering a late move this summer to sign Brighton’s Evan Ferguson. Erik ten Hag’s team has long admired the 19-year-old striker, but they are concerned about Chelsea’s potential interest in him.
The report states that it would take an offer exceeding £50 million to persuade Brighton to part with Ferguson, who is under contract at the Amex Stadium until 2029.
This follows journalist Simon Phillips’ report via Substack earlier this week that Ferguson’s name came up at Chelsea again recently. However, there are currently no strong indications that the Blues will aggressively pursue the Brighton frontman.
Should Chelsea Pursue Evan Ferguson?
While Ferguson appears to be a rising star, he may not be the ideal fit for Chelsea right now. The club already has several young forwards, including Jackson, Omorodion, and Marc Guiu.
If Chelsea is serious about adding another No. 9 to their squad, it should be someone proven and experienced in scoring consistently at the top level. Speaking to The Athletic last September, Alan Shearer praised Ferguson as a “very special talent.” The Brighton star has faced injury issues and missed the latter part of last season, but his size and maturity for his age are impressive.
The reality is that Chelsea can’t sign every highly-rated prospect, no matter how promising they may be.
