One of the best players in the world and a France international, Chelsea had a perfect opportunity to sign Kylian Mbappe when he was a child.
Mbappe received a trial invitation from Chelsea when he was just 12 years old. He traveled to London for a few days in 2011 and participated in a match versus Charlton.
His mother didn’t want to go back to London and demanded that Chelsea make a choice right away. The Blues wanted another trial before making a decision.
The mother of Mbappe, Fayza Lamari, was quoted by former Chelsea scout Daniel Boga in The Athletic as saying there would be no second visit and Chelsea had to sign her son then or not at all.
“You know English football, you tackle, you track players back when you lose the ball,” Boga said. That wasn’t how he was. He quit playing once he dropped the ball.
“We want to see him again and we want to see this aspect of his football,” Chelsea added.
The mother responded, “No, we won’t come again. I was interpreting. Tell them he won’t be coming back, she commanded. You should sign him right away if you want to. And she added, “You will return for him for £50 million in five years.” “Translate that,” she commanded.
“I’m unable to say that. To say something like this is too haughty. I decided not to translate it. I recently informed Jim Fraser, who is in charge of recruiting youth, that “you need to decide now” since I don’t believe they will return.
Mbappe relocated to Monaco, where he established himself until joining PSG in 2017.
