Former Chelsea player Jason Cundy has been sharing his thoughts on Conor Gallagher’s current contract dilemma at Stamford Bridge.
Gallagher’s Contract Dilemma
Conor Gallagher has entered the final year of his current contract, putting Chelsea in a challenging position this summer. They can either offer him a new contract or consider selling him, as losing him for free next summer would be a significant setback.
Potential Replacement: Andreas Pereira
Should Chelsea decide to part ways with Gallagher, they could sign Andreas Pereira from Fulham as a replacement. However, there is still time for Gallagher to sign a new deal. As it stands, he hasn’t yet committed to a new contract.
Jason Cundy’s Insights on talkSPORT
Jason Cundy, speaking on talkSPORT, emphasized Gallagher’s lifelong connection to Chelsea. The 24-year-old has been a part of the club since his youth, coming through their academy.
According to Cundy, Gallagher is keen to stay at Stamford Bridge and sign a new contract, but an agreement has yet to be reached. Cundy expressed concern over the situation: “When the transfer window shuts at the end of August, he will have less than a year left on his contract. If the window shuts and he has not been sold, Chelsea have got a bit of a problem on their hands.
“He is a Chelsea fan, he wants to stay at the club, he wants to sign a new contract from what I understand, and for some reason that agreement has not been made between him and the club, and something has got to be worked out. What the club don’t want is him leaving on a free next summer. That would be terrible.”
Tottenham as a Potential Destination
If Gallagher does leave Chelsea this summer, Tottenham could be a potential landing spot for him.
Chelsea’s Stance on Gallagher’s Contract
While Chelsea may be in negotiations with Gallagher over a new contract, they don’t seem desperate for him to sign it. If they were, the deal would likely have been done by now. The club’s acquisition of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who shares a similar profile to Gallagher, and their links to Pereira suggest they are preparing for Gallagher’s possible departure.
Gallagher’s Future with Chelsea
Despite being a key player under Mauricio Pochettino last season, making 50 appearances in all competitions, it appears that others at Chelsea don’t value Gallagher as highly. This makes his exit this summer quite possible.
Many Chelsea fans will be disappointed to see a homegrown talent like Gallagher leave, but as the contract saga continues, this seems to be the most likely outcome.
