Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has delivered a candid message to Mykhailo Mudryk, urging the 23-year-old winger to elevate his game and embrace a team-oriented approach if he aspires to secure a regular spot in the Chelsea lineup.
Mudryk, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in January 2023 with significant expectations, has struggled to leave a lasting impact in the subsequent year. Despite the hefty £88.5m price tag, the Ukraine international has only managed to tally four goals in 41 appearances for the Blues.
Pochettino, expressing his concern over Mudryk’s performance, acknowledges that the winger has found it challenging to convince him of a starting berth, with just nine Premier League starts in the current season. The Chelsea boss underscores the need for significant improvement from the young player.
“He started the game against Middlesbrough in the semi-final, which is one of the most important games for us,” Pochettino commented on Mudryk’s inclusion in the Carabao Cup. “Yes, now he is on the bench. Look, it’s about the form during the season – if you keep your form and you are the best during every training session.”
Pochettino emphasizes the meritocratic nature of the coaching staff’s decisions, indicating a preference for players who consistently deliver their best on the pitch. While acknowledging Mudryk’s remarkable individual qualities and potential, Pochettino underscores the importance of adapting to a team-oriented style of play.
“We have players that need to perform in a group. If you see him, it’s amazing, but after, you need to adapt and play for the team – he needs to adapt, and all of that needs time.”
As Chelsea aims to climb the Premier League table from their current 10th position, Pochettino’s message serves as a challenge and an opportunity for Mudryk to evolve and contribute more effectively within the team dynamic. The upcoming clash against Wolves presents a chance for Mudryk to showcase his progress and commitment to the collective cause.
