Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Leicester City on Saturday has positioned them as potential title contenders, with goals from Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez propelling the Blues to third place in the Premier League table. Despite their promising start, Troy Deeney believes defensive vulnerabilities could derail their campaign.
Title Ambitions or Top-Four Reality?
Chelsea’s 22 points after 12 games leave them just one behind Manchester City and six behind leaders Liverpool, both of whom have a game in hand. Former Watford striker Deeney acknowledged their current form warrants inclusion in the title conversation but questioned their ability to sustain it without addressing their defensive frailties.
“Right now, they should be looking at the title race,” Deeney told talkSPORT. “But the goalkeeper [Robert Sanchez] and the defenders keep letting in poor goals. That backline is going to cost them unless they make signings in January.”
January Transfer Window Critical
Chelsea’s summer transfer spree saw £197 million spent on 11 new arrivals, including goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen and defender Tosin Adarabioyo. However, both players have struggled for consistent game time. Deeney suggested Chelsea might need additional reinforcements in January to solidify their backline and improve their title credentials.
Missed Opportunities
The victory over Leicester could have been more convincing, as Chelsea dominated with an expected goals (xG) figure of 2.64 compared to Leicester’s 1.11. However, defensive lapses and missed chances highlighted lingering issues.
Cole Palmer’s shot, accidentally blocked by teammate Noni Madueke, epitomized Chelsea’s lack of ruthlessness in front of goal. Manager Enzo Maresca emphasized the importance of converting such opportunities against tougher opponents.
Manager’s Perspective
Maresca praised striker Nicolas Jackson for his versatility and work rate but acknowledged the need for improvement in finishing:
“For me, Nico is doing very well. He’s working hard on and off the ball. We are sure he will improve,” Maresca stated.
He also addressed the absences of Malo Gusto, who fell ill, and Pedro Neto, who returned injured from international duty but is expected back next week.
Tougher Tests Await
While Chelsea can celebrate their recent success, they face a critical stretch of games that will test their credentials. To establish themselves as genuine title contenders, they must address defensive issues and maintain consistency against stronger opposition.
The question remains: can Chelsea build on their promising start, or will the cracks in their defense ultimately cost them?
