Richard Keys has predicted that Chelsea would recruit three England stars, and Express Sport looks at how the Blues may line up if the deals go through.
If Chelsea follows Richard Key’s transfer recommendations this summer, they will be completely protected. By buying three of Gareth Southgate’s key players, Keys has backed Chelsea to establish an English spine. Express Sport looks at how the Blues may line up in the starting XI with Harry Maguire, Declan Rice, and Harry Kane.
Mendy, the goalkeeper
Following the lofty standards he established in his first season at the club, Edouard Mendy may not have had his greatest season. Thomas Tuchel, on the other hand, does not appear to be interested in replacing the Senegal star this summer.
Chelsea might buy a goalkeeper if Kepa Arrizabalaga leaves to gain more regular playing time ahead of the World Cup later this year. For the time being, though, Mendy’s job remains secure.
Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, and Maguire make up the defense.
Manchester United captain Maguire is the most surprise choice in Key’s selections. The centre-back has struggled at Old Trafford this season, and his future is unknown under new manager Erik ten Hag.
However, Keys feels that Maguire might benefit from a new challenge. He may play on the left side of a back three, with Thiago Silva in the center.
Cesar Azpilicueta’s future at Chelsea is uncertain, but if he does stay, he will most likely play in his usual right-back position.
James, Rice, Kovacic, and Chilwell are the midfielders.
Rice, according to Keys, is worth every cent of the £150 million price tag that has been thrown about. Before being released in 2014, the midfielder spent time at the Chelsea academy.
He and his family are Chelsea supporters, so a return to the club would be appealing. Rice, according to Keys, is the ideal substitute for N’Golo Kante, and his midfield partner in this lineup is Mateo Kovacic.
Reece James has been a standout performer for Chelsea this season, playing at right wing-back. Ben Chilwell’s comeback at some point next season will also be crucial, given his knee injury was a turning point last season.
