Jose Mourinho has revealed that he believes he would receive a 10-game ban if he were to openly express his thoughts about Roma’s loss to Sevilla in the Europa League final from the previous season. In that final, Spanish side Sevilla emerged victorious on penalties, marking Mourinho’s first defeat in a European final as a manager.
Mourinho’s frustration following the final centered around English referee Anthony Taylor, whom he criticized, suggesting that Taylor “seemed Spanish” in his decisions. The Portuguese manager also confronted Europa League officials in the stadium car park, where he reportedly referred to them as “f***ing crooks.” Subsequently, Roma fans targeted referee Taylor and his family with abuse at an airport, leading to further disciplinary actions.
As a consequence of his actions, Mourinho received a four-match ban, but some, including former Premier League referee Mark Halsey, believed that the suspension should have been more severe.
Mourinho, who has a successful history in European competitions, including winning the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017, has now chosen not to openly discuss his thoughts on the Roma-Sevilla match, fearing an extended ban.
He also mentioned that the victories against Leicester and Feyenoord during his tenure at Roma were historic for the club, and while he’s never cried on the pitch after a loss, he has been moved to tears after wins, emphasizing the significance of those two games for Roma.
