I think, is not there because” – John Obi Mikel says he’s spotted something big missing at Chelsea

Chelsea are in a solid position under new boss Enzo Maresca, showing improvement both in their form and team spirit. However, former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel has pointed out something he believes the Blues are lacking.
A New Era Under Maresca
Last season saw Chelsea struggle to a Europa Conference League spot, leading to Todd Boehly’s decision to bring in Enzo Maresca as manager. In his short time at the helm, Maresca has been able to build a sense of togetherness in the squad, which is starting to reflect in their performances.
However, their upcoming match against Liverpool will be a true test of how far they’ve come under Maresca and where they still need to improve.
Mikel’s Observations on Chelsea’s Leadership Gap
John Obi Mikel, a Chelsea legend who made 372 appearances for the club, believes that while Chelsea are heading in the right direction, they are missing one key ingredient—leadership. Having played alongside club icons like John Terry and Frank Lampard, Mikel knows what a successful, well-led team looks like.
On his YouTube podcast, Mikel mentioned that Chelsea don’t have a player like John Terry, who used to show passion and leadership on the pitch. Mikel reminisced about Terry’s ability to rally the team, saying:
“You remember how it used to be with John Terry in the second half, he would grab you around the neck, do you know what I mean? The leadership when I watch the games, I think, is not there because I don’t see players screaming at each other saying, come on, wake up, let’s go. But it’s starting to gel a little bit.”
Is Chelsea Lacking Leadership?
Mikel’s comments strike a chord when looking at Chelsea’s current squad, which is relatively young compared to past sides that boasted experienced leaders. Players like Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta, and John Terry in years gone by were known for their calming influence and leadership on the field.
While Reece James has the potential to take on this role, his long injury absences have limited his impact on the pitch, though he continues to influence the team behind the scenes.
Moving Forward
As Chelsea continue to evolve under Maresca, finding a leader to fill the void that Mikel points out could be the next step in solidifying their place among the Premier League’s top teams. With a young and talented squad, the Blues may eventually grow into the leadership roles that players like Terry once embodied.
The upcoming Liverpool match may reveal just how much progress Chelsea have made—and whether Mikel’s concerns about leadership will come to light.
