Despite injuries to key defenders Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana, Enzo Maresca has dismissed the need for Chelsea to sign another centre-back during the January transfer window.
Injury-Driven Speculations
While Chelsea weren’t initially expected to make significant moves this January, the absence of both Fofana and Badiashile has seemingly altered the club’s approach. However, Maresca remains confident in the current squad’s defensive depth.
Outgoings Take Priority
Chelsea’s primary focus this month is offloading players, with names like Ben Chilwell, Cesare Casadei, and Carney Chukwuemeka on the potential exit list. Even so, the possibility of adding a new centre-back remains under consideration.
Current Defensive Options
The Blues recently recalled Aaron Anselmino from his loan at Boca Juniors, but the 19-year-old is not yet ready to join the first team. Another option on the table is recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace.
Additionally, Chelsea has expressed interest in Palace captain and former academy player Marc Guehi. While Guehi would be a valuable addition, securing a deal this month appears challenging.
Potential Outgoings
For any new centre-back signing, Chelsea may first need to offload one of their current defenders. Axel Disasi has emerged as a likely candidate, with Juventus reportedly showing interest in the French defender.
Maresca’s Confidence in the Squad
Speaking before Chelsea’s FA Cup clash with Morecambe, Maresca expressed his belief that the club is adequately equipped defensively.
“At this moment, I think we’re OK at centre-back,” Maresca told The Evening Standard. “If [Fofana] can come back early, we’ll all be happy. [But] we have Benoit, who is close to returning. We have Josh, Axel, and Levi—all of them are doing well.”
Fans’ Doubts
Many fans remain skeptical of Maresca’s optimism, especially with the unclear recovery timelines for Fofana and Badiashile. Placing trust in young Josh Acheampong, particularly with Champions League football on the line, could be seen as a risky move.
Only time will reveal whether Chelsea sticks with their current defensive lineup or makes a strategic addition to bolster their backline.
