Reece James to Remain Captain
Under Enzo Maresca’s leadership, Reece James will continue as Chelsea’s captain. However, Maresca has revealed that other players will also be entrusted with leadership responsibilities.
Enzo Fernandez Named Vice-Captain
Maresca confirmed that Enzo Fernandez will serve as the vice-captain. He also mentioned that Levi Colwill is expected to be one of the additional vice-captains, as part of a group of two or three players who will share the role.
“Reece is our captain,” Maresca said, “and we have three or four others, like Enzo. The other day, it was clear—when Reece wasn’t available, Enzo stepped in as captain, so he’s definitely one of the vice-captains.”
Expanding Leadership Responsibilities
Maresca is also considering appointing one or two new captains to distribute responsibility more evenly among the squad. He believes that young players shouldn’t shy away from leadership roles just because of their age.
“For example, Levi,” Maresca explained, “he’s young but has a fantastic profile. I love Levi, but he needs to take a step forward in terms of personality to become a complete player. And it’s not just Levi; I’m considering two or three others as well.”
Maresca concluded by emphasizing that while only one player can wear the captain’s armband in any given match, he expects all of them to show bravery and take responsibility on the pitch.
