Chelsea’s Potential £38 Million Move After Gallagher Sale
Chelsea and Man United Eye £38 Million Midfielder
Following the agreement to sell Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid for approximately £36 million, Chelsea might ramp up their pursuit of a £38 million player also wanted by Manchester United.
Gallagher’s Sale Draws Heavy Criticism
Chelsea’s decision to let go of Conor Gallagher has been met with significant backlash. Gallagher, a key player under Mauricio Pochettino with 37 Premier League starts last season, was offered a two-year contract with an option for a third year. However, the Cobham academy graduate and fan favorite found the offer lacking and opted to join Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in La Liga.
Given Chelsea’s tendency to offer long-term deals to new signings, it’s understandable why Gallagher felt the contract extension wasn’t sufficient, especially considering his importance last season. With his contract set to expire next year, Todd Boehly and BlueCo were left with little choice but to sell him to Atletico Madrid rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2025. Nevertheless, the move has been heavily criticized by fans and pundits alike.
“I hope Conor absolutely smashes it over there. His treatment by the club has been nothing short of deplorable,” wrote the FPL Side Net Podcast on X. “For someone who did everything he could in his time to be treated as a commodity to balance books says more about the current ownership.”
World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit called the transfer “very sad” and expressed sympathy for Gallagher in an interview with Gambling Zone (via The Metro). “They’ve put him under pressure. They gave him an ultimatum, which was sign the contract or we’ll sell you,” said Petit. “If I was Gallagher, I would be screaming with anger. He gave everything for the club and fought for the badge. He saw other players coming in who had achieved nothing getting better terms. I think it’s very sad and I feel sorry for the player.”
Potential Move for Joao Gomes
In the wake of Gallagher’s departure, Chelsea might make a surprising move for another Premier League midfielder, Wolves’ Joao Gomes. According to Football Transfers, Chelsea could now intensify their pursuit of Gomes after selling Gallagher, but they face strong competition from Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United, who are also interested in the player.
The Brazilian, praised as a “super talent” by Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, is valued at around £38 million. Gomes made a significant impact at Molineux with 38 appearances in all competitions last season. A move for the 23-year-old might not have been necessary if Gallagher had stayed at Chelsea, but now the Blues seem ready to join the race for his signature.
Gomes has been on the radar of several Premier League rivals for some time, and it appears Chelsea is now seriously considering him as a potential addition to their squad.
