Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is under the microscope, with critics like Jason Cundy not convinced by his performances this season. After a string of notable mistakes, Sanchez has found himself at the center of discussions among pundits and fans.
One of the more high-profile critiques came from Jamie Carragher, who singled Sanchez out for his role in Liverpool’s second goal during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat last weekend. Carragher wasn’t alone in pointing fingers, but Jason Cundy, a former Chelsea defender and now pundit, has taken it a step further. He’s calling for Chelsea to dip into the transfer market, specifically targeting Liverpool’s backup keeper, Caoimhin Kelleher.
Kelleher, despite being second choice behind Alisson at Liverpool, has built a reputation for stepping up in big moments, especially against Chelsea. The 25-year-old helped the Reds secure a 2-1 win over the Blues, adding to his growing list of standout performances. Cundy, impressed by the Irishman’s consistent displays, believes Kelleher could solve Chelsea’s goalkeeper dilemma.
“Whenever I see Kelleher play, he looks top drawer,” Cundy said on talkSPORT. “If you’re a Liverpool fan, I know you’ve got [Giorgi] Mamardashvili coming in, but you don’t want Kelleher to go either. He’s too good to be a number two. I want Kelleher at Chelsea.”
Yet, despite Cundy’s plea, the situation surrounding Robert Sanchez might not be as dire as it seems. While Sanchez has been far from perfect, it’s essential to recognize the positive aspects of his game. Under Enzo Maresca’s guidance, the Spanish shot-stopper has managed an impressive 80% save percentage in the Premier League, ranking him among the top five goalkeepers in this category according to FBref. This highlights his ability as a shot-stopper, even if his distribution remains a weak point.
Sanchez’s struggles with ball distribution have been one of the primary concerns. If he can refine this part of his game, the call for Chelsea to sign another goalkeeper—whether Kelleher or anyone else—may not be necessary.
In any case, Chelsea recently signed young goalkeeper Jorgensen and Mike Penders, who is currently on loan at Genk. Adding another goalkeeper to the mix seems unlikely, meaning Cundy, and the rest of Chelsea’s fanbase, might have to come to terms with Sanchez for now. As Chelsea prepare to face Newcastle United on Sunday, Sanchez will surely be eager to prove his doubters wrong and put in a commanding display amid the mounting criticism.
