Chelsea’s struggles persisted over the weekend as they dropped more points in an away clash against Crystal Palace, extending their frustrating run of form.
Chelsea Held to 1-1 Draw at Selhurst Park
The Blues’ draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon added to their woes, leaving them with a mere two points from their last four Premier League outings.
Cole Palmer found the net in the first half, giving Chelsea a promising lead with their 13th league goal this season. Jadon Sancho played a pivotal role, delivering a mesmerizing assist for Palmer’s finish. However, this early advantage wasn’t enough to secure a much-needed win on the road.
In the 82nd minute, Palace’s center-forward Jean-Philippe Mateta capitalized on a chance, slotting home the equalizer and dashing Chelsea’s hopes of clinching three points.
Maresca Critiques Team’s Efficiency in Front of Goal
After the match, Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, didn’t hold back his dissatisfaction, specifically pointing out Nicolas Jackson’s inability to make the most of the opportunities presented to him.
“For a striker, it’s a game of chances—you either take them or you don’t. Today, he had two or three clear chances, which shows he’s in the right spots, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. Hopefully, next time, luck will be on his side,” Maresca stated.
“The most important thing is creating those opportunities because it means we’re playing the way we should. But ultimately, those chances have to be converted,” he added.
Striving for Intensity and Improvement
Maresca also emphasized the need for greater intensity during preparations.
“We always push to ramp up the intensity during training sessions leading up to games, even though our current levels are quite high. There’s still room for improvement, especially in taking those critical chances,” he explained.
Despite their challenges, Maresca noted that Chelsea remains among the league’s top-performing teams in terms of goal-scoring metrics. However, he acknowledged the need to translate that potential into results.
Chelsea fans will be hoping their team can turn things around quickly, as the pressure to climb the Premier League table continues to mount.
