Ian Maatsen’s Transfer to Aston Villa
Chelsea has reached an agreement to sell Ian Maatsen to Aston Villa. The Dutch left-back, who had a successful loan spell with Borussia Dortmund last season, is expected to join Villa for a fee between £35-£40 million, subject to a medical. Maatsen played a key role in Dortmund’s run to the Champions League final, contributing two goals and two assists in 16 Bundesliga appearances and impressing in Europe as well.
Despite his impressive performances, Maatsen does not feature in Enzo Maresca’s plans for Chelsea. The 22-year-old has been offered a six-year contract by Aston Villa, and his transfer fee will significantly boost Chelsea’s transfer budget as they look to strengthen their squad while adhering to the PSR limits.
Marc Cucurella Also Set for Departure
In addition to Maatsen, Chelsea is prepared to offload another left-back, Marc Cucurella. According to reliable journalist Matt Law, Cucurella, who earns around £175,000 per week, is also on the list of players Chelsea is willing to sell this summer.
Cucurella managed to work his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans last season, starting Chelsea’s final 12 Premier League matches and providing two assists. He was praised for his adaptability and performance in an inverted role late in the season. Despite his potential suitability for Maresca’s system, Chelsea appears open to accepting bids for the Spanish defender.
Broader Squad Changes at Chelsea
Journalist Matt Law has indicated that several Chelsea players might be on their way out this summer. In addition to Maatsen and Cucurella, Cesare Casadei and David Datro Fofana are also likely to leave, either on loan or permanently. Trevoh Chalobah is another player expected to depart as part of the squad overhaul.
Chelsea’s willingness to let go of several key players highlights the club’s commitment to restructuring the team under Enzo Maresca. While it remains to be seen if offers for Cucurella will materialize, the potential departures of Maatsen and other players indicate a significant reshaping of Chelsea’s squad for the upcoming season.
