Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter believes that goalkeeper Robert Sanchez will feel disappointed in himself after Chelsea’s recent 1-1 draw with Arsenal. The match at Stamford Bridge saw a number of standout performances from Chelsea players, with Wesley Fofana delivering what he feels was his best display since joining the team, and Moises Caicedo impressively winning his individual battle against Arsenal’s Declan Rice.
However, it was Sanchez who came under scrutiny after Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli scored from a seemingly impossible angle, slipping the ball in at the near post. Potter, who previously worked with Sanchez at Brighton, told Sky Sports that the goalkeeper will likely be frustrated with his mistake. Potter explained, “What he will do is he will back himself to give himself a bit more space to then give himself a chance to save the one at the back post as well. I think in this case he will be disappointed because even though it is close to his body, he will be a little bit disappointed with that.”
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has also weighed in, suggesting that Chelsea may need to look for an upgrade in goal if they wish to compete as serious title contenders. Sanchez, who has started every Premier League match this season, now faces potential competition from Filip Jorgensen. Although Jorgensen’s appearances have been limited to the Conference League, he delivered a strong performance in the recent 8-0 win against Noah, making key saves to preserve a clean sheet. With the upcoming international break, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca may consider giving Jorgensen his first league start, potentially providing the team with a solution to their goalkeeping concerns.
