After Kai Havertz’s “amazing” goal against RB Salzburg advanced Chelsea to the Round of 16, Graham Potter lauded the player.
The Blues defeated the league-leading Austrian team 2-1 at the Red Bull Arena to make it three victories in a row in Europe.
The visitors controlled the game, and the first half could have easily been over, but Chelsea squandered their opportunities.
Mateo Kovacic, who blasted a stunning shot into the top left corner 23 minutes into the game, was the only player who wasn’t.
The hosts made a comeback in the second half; Chuwubuike Adamu tied the score, but west London quickly took the lead once more.
German striker Havertz gave the Blues the three points with a stunning effort that touched the crossbar on its way in.
Chelsea has won Group E and is already through with just one more matchday remaining.
After their dominating victory over Dinamo Zagreb, AC Milan is only three points behind them, but they cannot overtake Potter’s team because they have already lost both of their previous meetings with them.
It appeared as though Chelsea would be in trouble after such a sluggish start to the group stages, where they lost to Zagreb and then drew with Salzburg, but they have recovered superbly.
The victory extends the English head coach’s nine-match winning streak since taking over after Thomas Tuchel was fired.
While in command, he has drew three games and won an astonishing six.
Although the entire team gave a strong performance, Havertz’s decisive shot to win the game stole the show.
His goal, his third of the year, will undoubtedly give the 23-year-old a major confidence boost.
Since the rematch and Potter’s inaugural match as manager, this was the first Champions League match he had started.
The 47-year-old expressed his admiration for Havertz’s performance after the game, saying: “He’s a really great player. His skill is there.
He’s been close, and a goal like that is undoubtedly going to help. To be honest, I doubt I could score a goal like that; I can only imagine!
“It’s a great strike and demonstrates the quality he possesses. I’m therefore quite happy for him.
Havertz will be hoping that his performance gave him the chance to impress his manager more by earning him additional playing time in the future.
