After a disappointing defeat to Servette earlier this week, Chelsea will be aiming to bounce back with a win as they face Crystal Palace in today’s London derby.
Tactical Changes Expected for the Derby
Enzo Maresca made significant changes to his lineup in the 2-1 loss to Servette, and it’s expected that he will make further adjustments for today’s match. Joao Felix and Pedro Neto, who were rested during the Conference League clash, could be key figures in today’s game after their impressive performances last weekend against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Both players came off the bench to combine for Chelsea’s sixth goal in their 6-2 victory at Molineux.
Joao Felix: A Potential No.9
With Chelsea unable to secure a new striker before the transfer window closed, Joao Felix might find himself playing as a center forward in some matches this season. Maresca has indicated his belief that Felix can fill the No.9 role, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him start in that position against Crystal Palace.
During the loss to Servette, Jackson came on in the second half but missed some key chances. Felix, who didn’t feature in that game, did make an impact when he played against Wolves, managing to score. While Jackson also found the net in that match, his missed opportunities against Servette might open the door for Felix to get a shot up front today.
Who Will Lead the Line Against Crystal Palace?
While there is a strong case for Felix to start as the lead striker, it’s likely that Jackson will get the nod. Despite his struggles against Servette, Jackson scored and assisted against Wolves, and Maresca has expressed his satisfaction with the young striker’s performances.
Although Chelsea didn’t secure a new striker on deadline day, the competition for the No.9 spot is still fierce with Felix and Christopher Nkunku both capable of stepping into the role. This should give Jackson some needed support and push him to perform even better as the season progresses.
