Marc Cucurella has finally addressed the viral song he sang about Erling Haaland after winning Euro 2024, and fans believe he may have been “humbled” by the experience.
Cucurella Shines at Euro 2024 After a Tough Season
Following a challenging season with Chelsea, Cucurella found his form representing Spain at the Euros. Spain ultimately triumphed, defeating England in the final held in Berlin.
The Viral Song That Took Aim at Haaland
During Spain’s celebrations, Cucurella aimed a playful jab at Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. He repeatedly sang a song that went, “Cucurella eats a paella, Cucurella drinks Estrella, Haaland trembles that Cucurella is coming.” The chant quickly went viral on social media.
Haaland’s Response on the Pitch
Haaland had his chance to respond when Chelsea faced Manchester City in their first Premier League match of the season at Stamford Bridge. Haaland made a statement by physically overpowering Cucurella to score the opening goal. Later in the match, when Cucurella went down with cramp, Haaland notably ignored him, which only fueled the narrative.
Haaland Addresses the Song
In a post-match interview with ViaPlay, Haaland humorously commented on the situation: “Cucurella is a funny man. Last season, he asked for my shirt… and this summer, he sings a song about me.”
Cucurella Finally Speaks Out
Until recently, Cucurella had remained silent about the buzz surrounding the song. Now, he’s opened up about the stir he caused with his cheeky celebration, leaving fans to speculate whether the left-back feels humbled by Haaland’s dominant response on the field.
Cucurella’s bold words may have added a bit of extra spice to their rivalry, but it’s clear Haaland had the last laugh—at least for now.
The 26-year-old defended the chant and said he would do it again.
“A lot of attention was given to that [the song] and these things happen,” he told Efe.
“I am very happy and I think that if someone has a song sung with his name it is because he is a top player or a world star, the name of a player who is not known would not be used.
“Everyone is happy because he scored and I am still just as happy to win the Euro. I would do it again, these things happen and that is all.”
Cucurella also claimed the chant was slightly misunderstood in its meaning and revealed that teammate Cole Palmer, a former colleague of Haaland’s, had helped play peacemaker at the PFA awards.
He added: “In the end, in England they took it a little out of context and I don’t think he [Haaland] understood it either.
“He read what they said and took it a little personally.
“Nowadays people take things very personally, but then they had some awards and my colleague [Cole] Palmer asked him about me and that was it. It was just an anecdote.”
But after reading the comments and explanation from Cucurella, fans think Haaland has “humbled” him.
One said: “Haaland humbled him hard.”
A second commented: “Bro doesn’t want to get smoked again!”
A third posted: “He realised he’s not built for this.”
A fourth person wrote: “Oh now he tries to turn it around.”
