Just minutes after firing Thomas Tuchel, Brighton CEO Paul Barber claims Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly approached him about hiring Graham Potter.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!“I believe they [Chelsea] have done their study,” Barber said on the Albion Roar podcast.
“We likely believed that the managers of the most of the top six clubs were set for the season. In general, we believed that there would be some consistency.
“What we certainly didn’t anticipate was for Chelsea’s new owners to determine that Tuchel wasn’t for them and for there to subsequently be a gap there.
“Boehly called me shortly after Tuchel heard the news and inquired about Graham.
“I suppose I was probably the first person outside of Chelsea to learn about Tuchel’s dismissal, and it was definitely before it became widely known.
It’s early in the morning, and when you see the name appear on the phone, you may think, “This isn’t a good call to get early in the morning.” It was definitely not the alarm call I was expecting.
These occurrences occur, and regrettably, there is a very small pool of elite coaches and a very narrow pool of clubs to which they are likely to apply when one of those clubs has an opening.
Then all of a sudden, you realise you have a great coach and friend and that you will be exposed.
Barber continued by saying that the only part that might have come up for Potter was the England position.
